IoT and Modern Applications

Engineering & Coding

The “IoT and Modern Applications” educational program invites middle school students on a journey of technological exploration, starting from Mars. Inspired by the real scientific and technological challenges that accompany the colonization of another planet, students are called upon to think about how smart and reliable systems can be designed for life and research in extreme environments.

Through experiential activities and experimentation, students learn the fundamental principles of the Internet of Things (IoT) and programming, using the Adafruit CLUE development board. They discover how devices collect and process environmental data and how this data is transformed into functional, interactive applications that connect the digital world with the physical one.

The program cultivates computational and scientific thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, helping students understand how modern technology can be applied to real-world challenges—on Earth and beyond.

Objectives of the program

By the end of the program, students will be able to:

By the end of this program, students will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles and applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its role in modern technological systems.
  • Explain how smart devices collect, process, and exchange environmental data in real-world scenarios.
  • Apply introductory programming concepts to control devices, sensors, and digital outputs.
  • Explore how technology can support life, research, and problem-solving in extreme environments such as Mars.
  • Develop computational thinking and logical reasoning skills through hands-on experimentation and project-based activities.
  • Analyze environmental data and make decisions based on sensor inputs and system behavior.
  • Collaborate effectively in teams to design, test, and improve technological solutions.
  • Strengthen creativity and innovation by designing applications inspired by real scientific and engineering challenges.
  • Recognize the connection between emerging technologies, sustainability, and future space exploration missions.
